Freezing London + Amsterdam Day 8

31/12/2015

Itinerary of today:
Breakfast @Bakkerij de Waal
Lunch @The Butcher
Tea @Febo de lekkerste
Bloemenmarkt
Schiphol Airport
London
Hong Kong

Finally came the last day of our trip. We checked-out the hotel and left our baggage at the concierge, then headed to find a place for breakfast.

Street art was everywhere in the city even on the wooden fences of a construction site.

We decided to keep our way walking to Albert Cuypmarkt while buying some food as breakfast on the way. Seeing many people queuing outside Bakkerij de Waal, we both were attracted to get inside for a glance. Roomcroissant (EUR2.5) caught my sight immediately and we bought one as it was quite expensive for budget travellers like us. Nevertheless, the pastry didn't disappointed us. The custard on top was not too sweet, together with the warm croissant came a savory pastry.

At the same time, we bought a big bottle of water at the supermarket. (EUR1.34)

Passed by Foot Locker, one of the biggest footwear chain in Europe. We were lucky as it was just doing a massive sale and in the end, I bought a pair of Timberland boots at half price. (EUR59.99- EUR5 tax refund)

Albert Cuypmarkt was 5 minutes walk away from then. Found that Volendammer Vishandel offered the unique pickled herrings, we ordered one to try even both of us thought that it looked and smelled weird. (EUR2.5) Was not that mesmerised by the taste of this famous local food but anyway, we were satisfied by its freshness.

Wandering around the market, there were lots of things going on ranging from fresh food to souvenirs to clothes. Having not much interest on them, we made our way back to The Butcher for lunch. (EUR9.6) The burger patty was as juicy as always and definitely worth to encore again. The only down side was not having drinks to buy and we gotta buy a very costly coke out there. (EUR2.5)

It was time for us to get on the free canal cruise using the Holland Pass we bought. Initially we wanna take the one offered by Lovers Company seeing so many good comments on tripadvisor, but we were not able to find the stop on the way back to the city. Seeing the hop-on-hop-off Amsterdam cruise near Heineken Experience, we just redeemed the tickets not wasting time anymore to get back to Central Station. There was quite a lot of information given on the audio and hence, we were able to know more a bit of this lovely city.

Knowing that the tickets could be used for more than one ride within 24 hours, we simply gave them out to a couple we met at the pier. Hope they enjoyed Amsterdam as much as we did.

Felt hungry again under such a cold weather. Febo de lekkerste was a good option for us to have a bit of hot goodies while saving time. It was run like buying food from little vending machines all along a wall. They were roughly priced ranging from EUR1.50 to EUR2.20. We ordered 2 kroketten (EUR1.5 each) by simply putting in the coins, opening it up and grabbing the food.

Continued to visit another must-see spot The Sex Museum. (EUR4/ person) It was an interesting museum with heaps of weird stuff, but then also showing some genuinely interesting history as well. It was a nice way to kill an hour or two but yet not extraordinary. Just a bit too crowded and sometimes we needed to queue up for some of the exhibits.

Seeing that we still got some time before heading to the airport, we walked all the way back to Bloemenmarkt to get some souvenirs. There was a row of barges selling tulip bulbs. I bought 3 shoes with the bulbs. (EUR10) My friend tried to plant them and they really blossomed! The mugs (EUR8) were for self use while the wooden shoes (EUR5) were for Lawrence's best friend.

Finally it was time to leave! Picked up our baggage from the hotel and went straight away to the airport with the complementary ticket bought with Holland Pass. (EUR4) It took merely 15 minutes train to get there as it was very close to the city centre. Before we set off, we used the voucher buying 2 sets of pastry at the train station with EUR2 each only from the printed train tickets!

It took us less than an hour to London for the transfer, still we got some snacks and drinks on board.

Arriving at Heathrow Airport, we posted the tax refund forms and shopped around for some souvenirs home. Fortnum and Masion tea bags (GPB3.9), jam (GPB4.75 +3.5) and Walkers cookies Christmas edition. (GPB10 for 4)

Unexpected thing happened after we boarded! We were upgrade to premier economy class! This definitely made the long haul flight more bearable. What a bless to end our trip! Drinks were served right after we settled down and the sleeping packs were a bit different. How lucky we were!
